Winter 2025, Week 3: Yes we ARE bowling tonight!

Writer's picture: PindependentPindependent

Bottom Line Up Front:

  • Yes, we will bowl tonight, Jan 19th.

  • No, we will not bowl on Sunday, Feb 9th (Superb Owl Sunday)

Howdy, my Pindependents!  I just have to say that this season is a delight, and for the first time, I think, in Pindependent history, every single registered bowler showed up last week to bowl. It's an absolute joy. I hope everything is rolling smoothly for you, if not, please reach out to me. I may not be able to fix them, but I can commiserate with you.

If you are interested in weekly league standings, past scores, and leaderboards, you can view these stats for our league either through the League Pals app on your phone, or at the LeaguePals.com website.  Use the email you registered for the league to set up your account if you haven't already.  I am going to try to be better about sharing the league standings weekly on our website blog, Facebook page and Instagram. This is new for me, so bear with me if I miss a week.  The list includes this week's standings, this week's lane assignments, and points won/lost thus far.

Other news:

Your league discount should be showing up at the snack bar (good for food, soft drinks, and non-league bowling). You can access the discount by using the phone number you provided when you registered.  One quick note: if two bowlers have the same phone number, that really confuses the system, so if your partner registered with their phone number, use that when you get your discount.

Finally, and most importantly, we are bowling tonight, January 19th. I had originally planned it to be off (because I was going to be out of town, it's the MLK weekend, and inauguration weekend, all those excuses). However, I had completely forgotten that in a few weeks, there's this big football game most people have parties to watch, and we don't usually bowl that night. Given the shortness of this season and the relatively short turnaround between winter and spring (2 weeks), it seemed smarter to just bowl tonight and take off the 9th of February for that Superb Owl thing.  So yes, please come tonight.

If you planned on being off because the initial emails told you we'd be off, you can post-bowl this week, although you'll need to try to do it by Wednesday, so scores can be adjusted. This is a one off for post bowling, we don't usually allow it for any week other than week 1.

If you do choose to post-bowl, make sure you make it clear on your score card you turn in that you are bowling for 1/19/25, and make sure that you email me your scores. Otherwise, I can't use them, because we cannot tell if you're pre-bowling for next week vs. post-bowling for this week.  So, help a sister out and make it clear when you turn in your scores.

Again, there is no time limitations on when you can pre- or post-bowl, as these are games we pay for, so if someone at the bowling alley gives you a hard time, remind them that these are not your free games, but they are being paid for by the league.

Speaking of which, you do have 2 free practice games each week you can use Mon-Sat until 6pm (although in the past they've let us go as late as 7pm start) and any time on Sunday.

Just a reminder:

If you are going to miss a week, you can pre-bowl, as discussed in our initial email, please make sure to let me know and send me your scores. If you pre-bowl and then have a change of plans, you cannot bowl that week, as we pay for those games. (If you really, really want to, come talk to me and we'll work something out, but that's never happened, so this is mostly a "just in case" scenario.)

Bowling etiquette (standard on every update email):

  • Be ready to bowl when it's your turn.  No, seriously, don't be delaying play because you're messing around somewhere else. Being in line at the bar is one thing, but consistently having to be told it's your turn is annoying.  Be considerate and ready when it's your turn.

  • Be aware of other bowlers: if 2 bowlers make the approach side by side, the bowler on the right has the right of way.  LOOK AROUND.  Make sure that when it's your turn, you're not bowling at the same time as the bowlers in the lanes next to you.

  • Once your turn is done, finish up and get out of the way. Again, we're trying to keep things moving, so once your roll is complete, do your happy dance and let the next bowler approach.

  • Wear bowling shoes. This should go without saying, but street shoes can damage the approach and lead to falls. Shoes are NOT included in the price of your season, so make sure to rent your shoes when you arrive if you need to.

  • Keep an eye on food and drink: don't spill near the approach, wet shoes cause falls (trust me on this one). If you're a sloppy eater, then eat at the table behind the benches on the lanes.

  • Don't be a jerk. No, seriously. We're all here to have fun. Don't be a jerk.

I will post each week's updates on the website blog as well, so if you miss the emails, check there.  www.pindependentbowling.com

If you're new, I included a selfie of what I usually look like. Although imagine me more flustered and panicked, like I always am at the start of the season. It gets calmer as we go on.
